Recently had a crazy problem with Asus P5B board, E6600 w/ 500 watt Antec SmartPower II PSU. USB ports were failing intermittently and would fail to power on maybe 2 out of 10 times. Found some evidence to support that the ripple inherent in the Antec SPII is too much for this particular setup. The same PSU is running a 3.4 Smithfield system with no problems.

Beware. Replaced 500 with a EarthWatts 430 and all is well. The intermittent nature of this one made it very difficult to troubleshoot.
